Michelle Obama Wears ALMASIKA in a Historic Portrait for the Obama Presidential Center

An enduring portrait of legacy, memory, and symbols.

A moment in history, carried through art and intention.

Ahead of the Obama Presidential Center opening in Chicago, Michelle Obama wears ALMASIKA Le Cauri Endiamanté earrings in The Obamas: Springing Forth, the first official portrait of President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama together.

Commissioned by the Obama Foundation and painted by acclaimed artist Njideka Akunyili Crosby, the work will be on view in the museum lobby when the Center opens to the public on June 19, 2026, Juneteenth.

A Portrait Layered with Memory

Akunyili Crosby has created a portrait that is at once monumental and intimate. Using her signature photo-transfer process, she builds the scene through archival imagery, family photographs, historical references, and moments from shared cultural memory.

The couple appears not only as public figures, but as people shaped by family, place, and experience. Through the window, Michelle Obama’s childhood home on Chicago’s South Side comes into view, with her father’s Buick parked outside. The arches recall the Oval Office, connecting the private histories that formed the Obamas with the public life they came to represent.

The title, Springing Forth, evokes growth, renewal, and the continuing movement of history. It is a portrait of legacy, but also of becoming.

Michelle Obama’s Style as a Language of Meaning

Michelle Obama’s style has long demonstrated that what we wear can communicate far beyond fashion. A silhouette, a textile, or a piece of jewelry can hold identity, memory, and intention.

In the portrait, her Le Cauri Endiamanté earrings are a subtle yet resonant detail.

Le Cauri, ALMASIKA’s debut collection, reimagines the cowrie shell, an ancestral talisman rich with symbolism. Across cultures and generations, the shell has been associated with prosperity, spirituality, and good fortune. Sculpted in 18K gold and natural diamonds, its familiar form becomes both ancient and contemporary.

To see this symbol worn by Mrs. Obama in a portrait devoted to heritage and legacy feels especially meaningful. The earrings become part of the work’s layered language, connecting personal adornment to a larger story of origin, possibility, and transmission.

A Chicago Moment, Connected to the World

The opening of the Obama Presidential Center marks a defining cultural moment for Chicago and for the South Side that shaped Michelle Obama.

For ALMASIKA, a Chicago-based house inspired by universal forms and connections across cultures, being present within this moment carries profound meaning. The portrait reflects a belief at the heart of our work: symbols endure because each generation carries them forward, giving them new meaning while honoring where they began.

We are deeply honored that Le Cauri will live within this historic image and be seen by generations to come.

Our heartfelt thanks to Meredith Koop for making this possible, and for recognizing the quiet power of jewelry with intention.
